Nobody expected a stray dog to survive being trapped in a bathroom with a leopard for almost 7 hours.
A leopard was chasing a dog called Bollu in Karnataka, India, when the pup dashed into a house and hid in the bathroom.
When the homeowner saw the leopard and slammed the door shut, the leopard chased the dog inside.
As the forestry department arrived hours later, they stripped sheeting from the bathroom roof and put a camera inside to see what was going on.
They were taken aback when they discovered the leopard and the dog seated on opposite sides of the small space, as though they had reached an agreement.
It took several attempts, but the forestry officials successfully managed to release the leopard, who fled back into the nearby wilderness.
Bollu was released from the bathroom unscathed — and he was visibly relieved to be free. Poor Bollu, I can’t imagine the level of anxiety he must have been under.
Although no one knows how the leopard and the dog coexisted together for so long, the dog’s hiding spot might have turned out better than he’d expected.
“Many are wondering why the leopard did not attack the dog,” journalist Prajwal Manipal wrote on Twitter. “Raghavendra, forest officer in Subramanya, says leopards prefer to attack in stealth but here, it may have been wary of the dog defending itself and the lack of a clear escape route.”
This photo was taken from outside through a gap in the window. It is a leopard and a dog stuck together since this morning inside the toilet of a house in Kadaba, Dakshina Kannada district. I am told the leopard escaped at 2 pm and the dog is alive! pic.twitter.com/hgjJhaXW03
