DIY Herbal Sore Throat Spray To Relieve Pain & Speed Healing

Whether it’s from a cold or allergy, a sore throat can really ruin your day. The good news is that there are several herbs that will help soothe a sore throat and you can find them in your local produce aisle – you may even be growing them at home.

Sage has astringent, antiseptic, and antibacterial qualities, and this herb has a long history of use for sore throats, coughs, and mouth inflammations. Thyme also has antiseptic and antibiotic properties and is often used to alleviate coughs and symptoms of acute bronchitis.  Ginger and honey are a superhero tag team for battling sore throats. The duo has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that inhibit the growth of fungus, bacteria and other microorganisms that can contribute to a sore throat. If you are feeling pain in your throat, try this recipe for a quick natural sore throat remedy.

IngredientsYoutube2 tablespoons fresh sage2 tablespoons fresh thyme (I used lemon thyme, but regular works fine)1 slice of fresh or dried citrus1 inch fresh ginger1 tablespoon raw honey (We used Nature Nate’s Raw Unfiltered Honey)vodka or neutral flavored alcohol (this is only used to extend the life of the spray)french press (optional)amber or blue color glass spray bottle How These Ingredients Benefit A Sore ThroatFresh Sage

Sage is an herb that offers a sweet, savory flavor along with a wealth of health-promoting properties. It’s long been held in high regard for culinary and medicinal purposes, thanks to its variety of flavonoids, volatile oils, and phenolic acids. It offers antiseptic, antibacterial and astringent qualities, and is well-known to kill viruses and bacteria, due to its ability to reduce inflammation and swelling. Native Americans used it long before modern medicine in order to cleanse the mouth and heal a sore throat among other conditions.

Making a tea with fresh sage helps to soothe the pain and encourage healing. Simply gather up two tablespoons of fresh sage, bring one cup of water to near the boiling point and then pour it over the leaves. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes before straining.

Fresh ThymeThyme is an herb that’s been used medicinally since ancient times and is considered one of the world’s most powerful antioxidants. Among its many uses is as a pain reliever, with the plant’s therapeutic benefits attributed to its antiseptic, antibacterial, antispasmodic and expectorant properties, among others. When it comes to sore throats, it works to soothe and cool to provide relief.

Use fresh thyme to make a tea as in the recipe above, bringing a cup of water almost to a boil and then pouring it over two tablespoons of the leaves, allowing it to steep for 10 to 15 minutes, and then strain.

Fresh or Dried CitrusWhile many types of citrus can help battle a sore throat, lemon is particularly ideal and can be used fresh or dried. The citric acid in lemon works to break up mucus that can lead to a sore throat and also soothes the throat while reducing inflammation. It’s rich in vitamin C, along with other essential nutrients, which help strengthen the immune system, and is a natural antiseptic, meaning to can help to kill infectious agents in the throat.

To use fresh lemon, juice half of a lemon and then dilute it in a small amount of water. Stir thoroughly and then use it as a mouth rinse.

Fresh GingerGinger root is a pungent spice with a warming and lemony spiciness. It’s a powerful anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Make a ginger tea by grating an inch of fresh ginger, pour over a cup of boiling water and allow to steep for 5-10 minutes before straining. Add a spoonful of raw honey for sweetness and extra health benefits.

Raw HoneySince practically the dawn of time, honey has been used to soothe a sore throat. Its thick consistency helps to coat to protect and provide relief, and it also contains antibacterial and antiseptic properties that fight against an infection to speed up the healing process. It serves to draw out excess fluid from inflamed tissue to decrease pain and swelling too. Simply add a tablespoon of raw honey to a cup of warm water, mix well and then slowly drink it.

4 More Ways To Ease a Sore Throat Naturally

Here are more natural remedies you can use right at home.
Saltwater RinseGargling with saltwater has long been known to be effective for easing the pain of a sore throat. The salt helps to decrease the swelling as it pulls fluids from mucous membranes and tissues while helping to eradicate unwanted microbes. All you have to do is add a teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water, stir and allow the salt to dissolve. Swish a mouthful of the mixture for 30 seconds or so, repeating every hour until the problem has resolved.

GarlicGarlic contains a powerful compound known as allicin which offers a variety of antimicrobial properties that has been shown in scientific studies to help battle all sorts of bacteria, as well as providing antiviral activity. That means whether your sore throat is the result of a viral or bacterial infection, consuming garlic can help. To use it raw, crush a garlic clove and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes to release the allicin, then simply swallow it. If that proves too challenging, you can add it to your meals through the day, or take a garlic supplement. Doing this even after your sore throat has healed may help prevent it and other ailments from occurring in the first place too.

OnionOnion also contains allicin and can work to ease your sore throat just like garlic. To use it, however, you’ll make it into a tea. Onion tea is a remedy that’s been around for many years to soothe the pain of a sore throat and calls for the skin of the onion. Add the skin of half an onion to a cup of boiling water. Let it boil until the water begins to take on the color of the onion skin. Strain the onion peel from the liquid and pour it into a mug. Allow it to cool until just drinkable. Sip slowly and within an hour, your sore throat should be gone.

Peppermint LeavesFresh peppermint leaves offer a wealth of medicinal benefits as they contain menthol. Menthol not only provides a cooling effect to ease a sore throat, it serves as a decongestant to break up mucus. The best way to use them for this purpose is to make a tasty tea. The University of Maryland Medical Center advises adding a teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves to a cup of boiling water. Let it steep for 10 minutes or so before straining. Allow to cool until drinkable and then enjoy up to five times per day until your sore throat has faded away.

Stephen Hawking-Brightest Scientist Who Taught Us How to Live Dies At Age 76

0

Stephen Hawking, the world famous cosmologist, used to say he was born exactly 300 years after Galileo’s demise, and finally he died on 14’th March, 2018 on Wednesday, exactly 139 years after birth of Albert Einstein.

This man was ahead of his time and was definitely one of the greatest physicists of his times. It’s true his life was full of struggles due to his physical disabilities, but he was a real hero who delved into the secrets of the universe, but also taught us how to live. We all knew him as a loving “wheelchair guy”, who despite his gradual paralysis due to Lou Gehrig’s disease, where he could ultimately move just his eyeballs, roamed freely around the world, and metaphorically through the entire universe, nurtured generations of students, had married twice, fathered three kids, and wrote some of the most memorable bestsellers.

He was a complete family man and mingled freely with presidents and kinds and the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, and his eyes lit up with that mischievous grin at good and bad jokes. To us, and to most scientists around the world, Stephen will be known for finding an exact relation between gravity (akin to the Einstein’s theory of relativity) that bends cosmos and ultimately determines the atomic randomness that resides in it and its destiny, swept helplessly along the river of time.

Physicist Stephen Hawking

Source: Wikimedia Commons

Like Galileo and Einstein, he focused on gravity and did his best and most in-depth work in it. This is the force everyone feels right in out bones, a kind of force that Einstein decreed, could even alter starlight, leaving, “lights all askew deep in the heavens.” So Dr. Stephen Hawking actually became an ultimate icon of curiosity and mystery and rock solid determination to finally know more about the place we’re in. Like Einstein, he was also a slow learner and never lost focus on any topic or question he had in his mind.

Dr. Hawking had legendary passion for discoveries, but could be irritatingly stubborn at times. Without that kind of iron will, frustrating to even his close friends at time, he would have slowly vanished from the scene a long time ago.

He was a lackadaisical graduate at 22, and while studying he was given a diagnosis of Lou Gehrig disease that kills in just three to four years. He later on was afflicted with this very disease and by the time he died, he’s successfully lived with it for around half a century!

Stephen Hawking loved talking about universe and black holes, the scariest things for all of us. Black holes are dense objects, most extreme manifestations of gravity, where even light fails to escape into the universe. Even Einstein had rejected that notion, but in the early seventies, astronomers around the world started discovering black hole candidates deep there into the sky, almost everywhere.

In intricate calculations, performed for hours, he discovered that black holes were actually fountains of bursting energy, buzzing faintly with radiation and particles. Over vast eons these fountains would explode, giving to the entire universe that energy and mass which had disappeared billions of years ago, in a kind of cosmic reincarnation.

Dr. Stephen Hawking continued to outlive all kinds of odds and gradually progressed from cane to wheelchair, and then from a grunting to a highly sophisticated voice synthesizer first operated by his thumb, and with gradual paralysis when he could not move hands, by his eyeball, it was not hard to think of this man as his own metaphor, a lonely scientist with his own foot in his very own “black hole”.

Woman Conducts Surgical Procedure On Monarch Butterfly With Damaged Wing, The Following Day It Surprises Her In The Most Awesome Way

0

Depending what season they’re born, Monarch butterflies can live from 2 weeks to about 5 months, but this one’s time was just to be cut even much shorter. Thankfully, Romy McCloskey decided to assist. “I fell into raising butterflies by accident when I found 3 caterpillars on a bush in my front lawn,” she said. So after one of her lovely butterflies got injured, Romy knew she had to assist. McCloskey turned her home into an operating space and utilized regular home products to perform a wing transplant.

“I have always had a love for butterflies,” she said. “They have a very personal meaning to me. Before my mother died, almost 20 years ago, she said to me, ‘Romy, whenever you see a butterfly, know that I’m there with you, and that I love you.’”

Romy McCloskey is a professional costume designer and master hand embroiderer, so this was right up her alley. Her supplies included a towel, a wire hanger, contact cement, a toothpick, a cotton swab, scissors, tweezers, talc powder, and an extra butterfly wing from one of her little girls that died a few days before.

According to McCloskey, there’s no need to drug the butterflies when performing such a procedure. She compared their wings to human nails or hair: “They do not have pain receptors.”

“[P.S.] I feel it is important to note that the butterfly sustained his injury during pupating into his chrysalis. It was not a genetic defect or deformity due to the Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE) parasite that fatally infect Monarchs. I did have a lot of people asking why I would ever introduce inferior or defective genes into the butterfly gene pool. I had to explain to many that I did not. In fact, any caterpillars or butterflies that are infected with OE or Tachinid fly (T-fly) larva must be euthanized to stop any further contamination in the Monarch population.”

Scroll down to check out how the surgery went!

“The patient: this 3-day-old little boy was born with torn upper and lower wings. Let’s see how we can help!”

The Moon Is Doing Something Extraordinary On January 31, 2018 It Has Not done In More Than 150 Years

0

Natural events that happen once in a decade are exciting, and people watch out for them keenly. Those that occur once in a Jubilee are fascinating, and the world celebrates them. However, those that happen in a century or more are remarkable and extraordinary events. For example, did you know that a super blue blood moon is about to occur on 31 January 2018? The last time it happened was 31 March 1866, which is 151 years ago.

It means this event will be a new experience for everyone on earth regardless of how old they are. As you can now tell, the occurrence of a super blue moon is rare. That might explain why so many people are unaware of what it is. Here is a breakdown of it.

A Blue Moon

We can see the sunlight that reflects from the moon to the earth. However, the revolution of the moon around the earth means that we mostly see a portion of this light from the earth. In fact, we see more of the moon as it moves farther from the sun during its revolution around us.

A full moon occurs when you can see the entire moon because the earth is between it and the sun. At this stage, the moon lies slightly above or below its alignment with the sun. That means the earth will not block the sun’s light from reaching it even though it lies between the two bodies.

Usually, a full moon occurs once in one month. However, a lunar revolution takes 29.5 days to happen while the Gregorian calendar has an average number of 30.42 days in a month. These differences result in a full moon occurring twice in a month every two to three years.
Blue moon is the term used to describe the second full moon in a month.

A Supermoon

The moon revolves around the earth in an elliptically. That means the distance from the moon to the earth changes based on where the moon is in this orbit. Sometimes, a full moon occurs when the moon is at its closest distance to the earth. The fully visible moon will appear larger than usual because it is near the earth. The term used to describe the enlarged appearance of the moon at this time is a supermoon. It occurs three to four times each year.

A Blood Moon

The sun hits the earth with its light. The earth, being an opaque object, casts a shadow on anything behind it that is within a given distance. Sometimes the moon finds itself in the heart of this shadow, i.e., it enters into the center of the earth’s umbra. Some light reaches it indirectly, so it appears red. People refer to this appearance as a blood moon. NASA predicts that the earth will experience 3,479 blood moons from 2,000 BC to 3,000 AD. That translates to an average of 0.6958 eclipses each year.

Each of these events is spectacular, and people go to great lengths to see them. However, 31 January 2018 is a special day because all of them will be taking place at the same time. Do not miss it because this event occurs once in a lifetime.

Where and What Times Will the Eclipse Happen Worldwide:

Lunar eclipses can be visible from everywhere on the night side of the Earth, if the sky is clear. From some places, the entire eclipse will be visible, while in other areas the Moon will rise or set during the eclipse

Its So Cold In USA That Niagara Falls Is Frozen It Looks Straight From A Movie

0

Looking at this seems like one of those computer-generated worlds for a movie. This has happened before but never had I seen pictures like these. It reminds one of Narnia or Frozen.

Niagara falls are a spectacular place to visit at any time of year, however in winter, especially seriously cold winters like North America is currently experiencing, they are truly a breathtaking sight.

While the bitter temperatures have caused chaos in some areas and affected the New Year’s plans of millions, one upside to the big chill is the raw beauty of nature. Many areas of the falls have frozen, forming huge, elaborately shaped ice formations dangling precariously on the rocks, giving the impression of a Narnia-like winter fantasy land.

You can scroll down below to check out some of the gorgeous pictures for yourself, they make you feel cold just looking at them!

New Research Says That We Inherit Intelligence From Our Mothers

0

Maternal genes are responsible for our intelligence, a new study has revealed. According to the latest genetic study, the genetic shapers of human intelligence are carried in the female X chromosome. This means that our mothers’ genetics are the main determiners of how clever we eventually end up to be, with the two X and Y chromosomes derived from our fathers making no difference.

Mothers have a higher probability of passing on intelligence genes to their offspring because these strands of genetic material are contained in the X chromosome rather than the Y chromosome from the father. The fact that females have two Xs means that they are more likely to transmit their intelligence to the next generation than males. Before this study, doctors have always believed that both parents are more or less equally responsible for their offspring’s intelligence.

But now, new evidence seems to suggest that the female X chromosome — which carries more than a thousand genes — contributes the most when it comes to intelligence. Medical researchers now believe that any genes inherited from the father that may be responsible for a child’s advanced cognitive functions are probably automatically de-activated such that they end up playing little or no role at all in genetic development.

In case of any single intelligence characteristic that is effected by the mother’s genetics, the corresponding genes from the father will be automatically de-activated. Conversely, for those other offspring features that are effected via the father, their corresponding maternal genes will be later de-activated.

The human genetic system has a category of genes referred to as conditioned genes. These are thought to function only if they are passed on from one parent in some cases and the other parent in other cases. Intelligence shapers are believed to be carried in the genes that are inherited from the mother.

According to a University of Cambridge research study on brain development and genomic conditioning conducted in 1984, maternal genetics are responsible for more material to a child’s brain centers than paternal genetics. Lab studies carried out on genetically-modified rats have demonstrated that those infused with an additional dose of maternal genes develop larger brains and heads alongside smaller bodies. On the contrary, rats infused with an additional dose of paternal genes end up with bigger bodies but smaller heads and brains.

Scientists involved in this research also deduced that there were brain cells that contained only one of either paternal or maternal genes in six different sections of the rat brains that were responsible for controlling varying cognitive functions in the body. Brain cells derived from paternal genes and mostly located in the limbic system were associated with functions like food, sex and aggression.

However, the researchers weren’t able to find any cells linked to paternal genes in the cerebral cortex where the vast majority of advanced cognitive functions like thinking, reasoning, speech and planning are controlled from. Given that rats are quite different from humans, Scottish scientists decided to take a more human approach to investigating the source of human intelligence by interviewing more than 12,686 young people between 14 and 22 years of age every year since 1994. They thus concluded that theories derived from the experiment on rats actually apply in reality.

This Cat And Dog Love Travelling Together, And Their Pictures Are Absolutely Epic

0

Avid hikers Cynthia Bennett and her boyfriend adopted their dog Henry back in 2014. At first Bennett was going to pick a golden retriever mix, but then she came across Henry at an adoption event. He was only 14 weeks old, but already five times bigger than the other puppies of the same age. When she entered Henrys pen he just curled up into her lap, went belly up and flipped his head over her arm. That was when she knew he was the one.

I think we only had him for three days when we took him on our first hike, Bennett told The Dodo. He found the steepest, tallest rock around, and he ran up to the top of it to look over the edge. Thats why they started calling him their little mountain goat.

A few months ago the couple decided that theyd like to have another pet in their family. Bennett really wanted a rescue kitten, and after five months of searching the shelters they finally found a Siamese kitten mix named Baloo. They introduced the kitten to their dog and Baloo just fell in love with Henry all he wanted was to play and snuggle with him.

It wasnt long until Baloo started going on their first trips together. I get a lot of questions about how we got him used to it. But he really loves it. He really wants to go outside, Bennett said. If I touch Henrys leash, [Baloo] will start screaming at the door.

Horses Can Read Negative Emotions in Humans

0

The human-horse relationship dates back to centuries ago. In fact, by 3000 BC, there is evidence that horses had started being used for transport. Years after that, horses played very significant roles in helping out during warfare, in plowing machines, pulling of carriages and in construction. The domestication of horses became more popular with horse riding and people keeping horses in their homes for their beauty.

Did you know that humans and horses are able to communicate through emotion?

It is a fact that the more someone interacts with a horse, the better they become at being able to read their emotions. It is no wonder that experienced riders can tell what is going on when a horse flicks its tail or makes expressions by their eyes.

It was discovered that horses could understand some of the emotions being experienced by humans. For instance, a horse may be able to tell when one is nervous or sad. The Equus caballus, otherwise described as the modern horse, is way friendlier compared to the horses that existed years ago before the domestication of horses.

The ability of horses to comprehend human emotion is attributed to the fact that they used to live in bands. The bands would ordinarily be inclusive of different types of horses such as stallions and fillies. Given that they were very close to each other, the horses were able to form relationships. It is said that it is at this point that horses started being able to learn and understand emotions. In the same light, horses can be able to form relationships with humans and can thus tell differences in touch, how stiff a rider is or the tone when one speaks.

Interesting right?

Well, it gets even more interesting as the Biology Letters paper reported that horses have the ability to as well read human facial expressions. Up until this announcement was made, dogs were the only animals which were able to depict this ability. For a long time, most of us believed the myth that horses do not have good sight. The latest revelation, however, proves the contrary.

Thanks to the study that the University of Sussex did on the horse’s ability to understand facial expressions, you and I are better off smiling the next time a horse is close by. The chances are that if you went close to a horse with a grin on your face, you might get kicked. This is because they were able to prove that horses can indeed distinguish expressions made by humans.

During their study, they exposed 28 horses to two sets of photographs. In one, a man was smiling while on the other picture had a man expressing anger. The results indicated that when shown the picture with a negative expression, the horses looked through their left eye. This is a typical response, in dogs as well, showing that the animal is using its right part of the brain and is preparing to engage. Also, they observed that in that situation, there was an increase in the heart rate.

The research, which was led by Amy Smith, indicated that there is a possibility that the horses were applying the acquired ancestral skill to distinguish the various expressions. Ordinarily, a horse makes communication by making sounds like humming, twitches or sighs. However, an earlier study by the same university concluded that horses could make facial expressions.

While humans can make 27 expressions on their face, the horse is not doing badly off at 17 different facial expressions. Whereas little is known about how many expression a wild animal can make, the chimpanzee is said to be able to make 14 distinct emotions.

It was, however, pointed out that the horses which were involved in this study came from a riding school. This might have given them an added advantage at being able to decipher the different facial expressions as they frequently interact with humans. It should be noted that research conducted on the ability of dogs to read expressions led to the conclusion that the more familiar the dog is to a human, the better the dog will be at reading their expressions.

It is fascinating to learn about the shared language humans have with horses. It comes as no surprise that horses have been linked to being therapeutic as evident by stories from the art belonging to earlier human generations.

It is fascinating to know that horses and humans share communication through emotions and facial expressions. With such knowledge, the interaction between humans and horses will get definitely better.
